Guam Rocks! Live from Ritidian

WERI kicks off the Guam Rocks! show at Ritidian’s National Wildlife Refuge as part of a series of student field trips running from April to May.

Students participated in learning about Guam’s geology through a game called “Sink or Float?”, where they learned what characteristics determine the density of a rock. Other rock characteristics were also exhibited with local samples of magnetic sand and a rock bubbling when exposed to some chemical.

The inner-workings of the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer (NGLA) was also revealed through a mini model. During the demonstration, the students witnessed how Guam’s population gets their freshwater supply through production wells that lie on top of the aquifer. Here, they also learned the importance of protecting the freshwater resource by conserving water use and avoiding contamination through dumping and chemical spillage.

In turn, WERI is happy to see young minds light up in excitement for science and hopes to inspire future scientists with their hands-on demos and real-world advice through this series of outreach events.
