International collaboration between WERI-UOG and CWNU G-LAMP with research workshop, MOU signing, and NGLA aquifer tour

Dr. JongKyu Park and Dr. Yuming Wen introduce the international collaborative workshop between CWNU G-LAMP and UOG WERI.

WERI hosts an international collaborative research workshop with Changwon National University’s (CWNU) Global Learning & Academic research institution for Master’s, PhD students and Postdocs (G-LAMP) on Jan. 16, 2025. Presentations spanned across various areas of chemistry, biology, physics, and hydrology.

The students and researchers from CWNU were welcomed by Dr. Yuming Wen, WERI director, and Dr. JongKyu Park, CWNU G-LAMP vice president and director.

The first set of presentations were given by representatives from CWNU. Dr. Seuongyoon Oh, CWNU associate professor, showcased his work that focused on the use of environmental DNA metagenomics to bridge biodiversity understanding and ecosystem management. Dr. Soonbeom Seo, CWNU assistant professor, highlighted the application of superconductors and ion irradiation experiments during his presentation session.

Research assistants from WERI also shared their research on the latter part of the workshop. Their projects encompass areas of water quality (with the patterns and trends of salinity in Guam by a recent environmental science program graduate, Ms. Hazelle Ko), deep observation wells (Ms. Mary Clare Snaer), and data visualization (MAppFx project, produced by the information management for the Guam Hydrologic Survey, presented by Ms. Dannika Valerio).

The CWNU group was also introduced to the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer by Dr. Nathan Habana, WERI associate professor, during his virtual tour of the aquifer.

The second day of CWNU’s visit on Jan. 17, 2025 began with an MOU signing ceremony held at UOG. The momentous occasion marks a partnership between WERI-UOG and CWNU G-LAMP for future collaborations. After the ceremony, WERI associate professor, Dr. Kim led the CWNU team on a fieldtrip to tour sites of the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer.
