Research Assistants Ms. Nicole Sulla Mathews and Ms. Mary Clare Snaer represented the Water and Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI) at the 2026 UCOWR/NIWR Annual Water Resources Conference, held June 8–10, 2026, at the Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel in San Antonio, Texas.

The annual UCOWR/NIWR conference brings together researchers, students, water resource professionals, and policymakers from across the United States and its territories to share current research and address emerging water resource challenges. WERI’s participation highlighted ongoing research efforts focused on Guam’s groundwater resources, land cover change, and sustainable water management.

Ms. Mathews and Ms. Snaer presented during Session 21: Groundwater II on June 8, 2026.

Ms. Snaer presented “Hydrologic Analysis of the Deep Observation Wells in the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer,” examining long-term CTD data from nine deep observation wells to better understand how freshwater lens thickness responds to rainfall and drought.

Ms. Mathews presented “Land Cover Change in the Finegayan Basin, Guam (Early 2000s–Present) Using Seasonally Calibrated Supervised Classification Workflows,” which applies supervised classification methods to evaluate land cover changes in one of Guam’s groundwater basins.

In addition to presenting her research, Ms. Mathews was awarded the NIWR Regional Student Travel Award for the Oceania and Islands Region. This competitive travel award is given to two students from each NIWR region and supports student participation in the annual conference.

WERI congratulates Ms. Mathews and Ms. Snaer for their contributions to water resources research and for representing Guam and the University of Guam at the national level.
