WERI Hosts Annual GHS Workshop
The Water and Environmental Research Institute of the Western Pacific (WERI) hosted the annual Guam Hydrologic Survey (GHS) Workshop, bringing together researchers, water-resource professionals, students, and local agencies to share the latest research and developments concerning Guam’s water resources. This year’s agenda featured presentations from WERI, the Guam Environmental Protection Agency (GEPA), Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA), and the National Weather Service (NWS), covering topics such as groundwater and aquifer research, water quality, emerging contaminants, climate and rainfall patterns, and new tools for accessing Guam’s hydrologic and geologic information.
Among the highlights of the workshop were two of WERI’s newest resources. WERI Research Assistant Ms. Dannika Valerio introduced the newest MAppFx GeoGallery, an interactive resource that connects mapped locations with photographs and information to help users explore Guam’s geology. WERI Research Assistant Ms. Atasha Bautista also presented the new 2026 State of the Aquifer (SOTA) Report, providing an updated look at the condition and understanding of Guam’s Northern Guam Lens Aquifer.
The workshop also featured several other WERI researchers and projects focused on expanding knowledge and access to Guam’s water-resource information. Dr. Nathan Habana introduced the fundamentals of the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer (NGLA) and its accompanying map and later presented the Hydrologic Map of Guam Watersheds (TR 190), highlighting WERI’s latest mapping of Guam’s watershed systems. Ms. Sydney Quintanilla provided a walkthrough of the new Guam Hydrologic Survey website, demonstrating its updated navigation and how users can access GHS maps, reports, databases, and other hydrologic resources. Ms. Valerio also presented GHS’s broader MAppFx collection, showcasing how its interactive data-visualization products make Guam’s hydrologic and geologic information more accessible.
Ms. Mary Clare Snaer presented NGLA DOWs Technical Report 189, sharing research related to deep observation wells within the Northern Guam Lens Aquifer. Ms. Atasha Bautista presented WERI TR 191, covering groundwater modeling and nitrate conditions within the Tomhom Aquifer, in addition to her presentation of the new SOTA Report. The WERI program concluded with a presentation on WERI Laboratory Services and the University of Guam Environmental Science Program, giving attendees a broader look at the laboratory, research, and educational resources supporting environmental science and water-resource work on Guam.
Partner agencies also shared important updates affecting Guam’s water resources. Guam EPA presented recent dieldrin statistics and monitoring information, while GWA discussed the use of granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration for addressing dieldrin and PFAS in Guam’s water supply. NWS Guam also provided an overview of the El Niño cycle and its effects on Guam, comparing this year’s rainfall and weather patterns with observations from past decades. Together, the presentations highlighted the importance of continued research, monitoring, treatment, and interagency collaboration in understanding and protecting Guam’s water resources.
