On Nov. 20, 2023, the University of Guam breaks ground for two new buildings, a Nursing Annex for the School of Health and a facility for WERI.
Cathleen Moore-Lin, the Executive Director of RCUOG, reflects on the hurdles the team overcame in the last few years to get to this momentous occasion—from the COVID-19 pandemic, funding constraints, to regulatory processes, and most recently, Typhoon Mawar. She celebrates in her speech, “This is a joyous moment!”
UOG President Anita Borja Enriquez also describes in her speech on how these two facilities will contribute to the overall development of Guam through workforce training and development and the monitoring and assurance of the quality of drinking water.
For WERI, this new building takes its services and research operations to the next level.
In his speech, former WERI Interim Director, Dr. Ross Miller explains how this vision started with the founders of WERI and carries on to this day.
He says, “It is embodied by WERI’s mission statement: trustworthy and timely research, instruction, and advice through scientifically informed development and effective management of the freshwater resources of Guam, CNMI, and the FSM.”
The new WERI building is set to be a 13,000-square-foot building located at the Dean’s Circle. It extends the space of the current Water Quality Lab and accommodates additional equipment to expand the work and services the WQL team can perform.
It also will hold spaces for offices for WERI faculty and research assistants, classrooms, conference space, other labs for water research and to support EV program.
The two buildings are expected to be completed in 2025.
